 　　The death toll¹ of the heat wave spreading across India has risen to over 22-hundered.

　　Local meteorological officials report that a high temperature of 47.1 degrees Celsius² has been recorded at the country's central state.

　　Professor at Allahabad University, Dr Sumeet Dwivedi, says cooling monsoon³ rains will fall in southern India next week, and further ease the weeks-long heat wave.

　　"The Kerala coast is most likely to receive the monsoon rainfall on June 1. Between June 1 and 5, the monsoons⁴ will start in Kerala. And it is expected to reach Allahabad (Uttar Pradesh) between June 15 to June 20 for sure. There are also chances of one or two pre-monsoon showers."

　　The monsoon season is expected to last until the end of September.

　　Currently, showers and thunderstorms in some parts of southern India have alleviated⁵ the heat wave.
