This is because English has many words and phrases from different languages, but with similar meanings.

因为英语里有很多对单词和词组来自不同的语言，其实意思很相近。

For example, the word sick came from a word once used by the Angles³ and the Saxons, while ill came from a word once used by the Norwegians.

比如，单词“sick”是源于盎格鲁人和撒克逊人曾经使用的单词，而“ill”则是源于挪威人曾经用过的单词。

1 puzzled   

adj.迷惑的；困惑的
