 Chinese President calls for stronger strategic reserve forces

Chinese President Xi Jinping has ordered the People's Liberation Army to reinforce the party's leadership over the troops and enhance its war capabilities¹.

Xi Jingping, who is also chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the comment while inspecting a military command area in east China's Jinan city.

Xi Jinping urges generals to learn and implement² strategy on national defense³ and military reforms, which are outlined in a key decision approved at a key Party meeting earlier this month.

The reform blueprint⁴ promised to optimize⁵ the size and structure of the army, reform the leadership system, and reduce non-combat institutions and personnel.

 

Foreign planes identified in China's air defense zone

The People's Liberation Army Air Force on Friday identified and verified foreign military planes entering China's recently established East China Sea Air Defense Identification Zone, according to a spokesman for the force.

Shen Jinke said fighter jets with the PLA air force on Friday morning took off in an emergency response to verify two reconnaissance aircraft from the United States and identify 10 Japanese planes. 

Shen said the PLA air force has realized its effective normal monitoring of targets in the zone.

 

China's ADIZ will not cause tension: spokesman

China's Foreign Ministry⁶ says the country's newly-established Air Defense Identification Zone will not cause regional tension. 

The Ministry's spokesman Qin Gang says China's ADIZ is not aimed at any specific country and is designated to exercise the country's right to effective defense. 

Qin says the ADIZ has not influenced the flight order and normal fly-over since its establishment last Saturday.

The spokesman also refutes Japan's criticism on China's ADIZ and reiterates⁷ China's adherence⁸ to peaceful development.

Japan set up its ADIZ in 1969 and has expanded twice since then.

 

China urges efforts to boost China-Russia ties, develop SCO

Chinese Premier⁹ Li Keqiang has called for efforts to bring China-Russian relations and development of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to higher levels.

Li Keqiang made the remarks while meeting with his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev in Uzbekistan.

He called for efforts to deepen investment and finance cooperation, as well as ecological¹⁰ and energy cooperation.

He also says two countries should boost cultural and people-to-people exchanges, and jointly¹¹ safeguard regional and world peace. 

For his part, Medvedev said the relationship between the two countries is friendly and maintains a good momentum¹² of development.

Medvedev called on both sides to boost cooperation in energy, economy and transport, as well as cooperation between Russia's Far East and China's northeastern region.

Both leaders were attending the 12th SCO ministerial meeting in Uzbekistan.

 

Pro-government supporters join Ukraine's demonstrations¹³

Around 10,000 people took to the streets of Kiev, capital of Ukraine, Friday to show support of the government's decision to put the country's European integration¹⁴ bid on hold. 

A meeting to endorse¹⁵ the government's decision to suspend signing of an association agreement with the European Union (EU) was organized in the central European Square near the Independence Square, where the pro-Europe protesters were continuing for the eighth consecutive¹⁶ day their rally to back up the European integration. 

Despite the closeness of opponents' camps, the protests went on peacefully, according to police.

 

Thai PM rules out an early election

Thai Prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra has ruled out an early election.

The comment comes amid continuous protests targeting state ministries¹⁷ in Bangkok.

Yingluck is on record saying the situation in her country is not calm enough for polls.

She reiterates she will not authorize¹⁸ the use of force against protesters.

 

PetroChina sued over pollution in NE China

A Chinese environmental group is suing the country's oil giant PetroChina for what they claim is severe pollution in northeastern Jilin Province.

PetroChina and its Jilin subsidiary are being sued for illegally discharging waste drilling water which poisoned local groundwater and farmland. 

The All-China Environment Federation¹⁹ wants the company to pay 60.75 million yuan or almost 10 million U.S. dollars for environmental restoration. 

PetroChina has refused to comment on the lawsuit²⁰.

However it says an investigation²¹ team has been sent to Jilin.

 

China intercepts²² 1,659 substandard food shipments Jan.-Sept.

Chinese authorities discovered more thn 1,600 batches²³ of substandard food imports in the first nine months of this year.

The country's top quality supervisor²⁴ says Wrong labels, microbial contamination and poor quality were the main problems discovered in these food imports.

The rejected food products fall into 21 categories, with most of them classified as dairy products, alcohol, cake and biscuits, beverages²⁵ and grain products.

All substandard products were either sent back or destroyed.
