Brahimi expect no substantive1 results from ongoing2 Syria talks
UN-Arab League mediator3 Lakhdar Brahimi admits he does not expect to achieve substantive results from the current Syrian peace talks in Geneva.
Brahimi has made the comments following the fifth day of joint4 meetings between delegations5 representing the Syrian government and the opposition6.
Despite his pessimism7, Brahimi does note the two sides have, for the first time, openly discussed the possibility of the creation of a transitional government in Syria.
However, he says those talks are very preliminary.
Brahimi does say the two sides are still willing to continue their negotiations8.
Pakistan's prime minister says his government is still planning to pursue peace talks with the Pakistani Taliban, despite a recent spate10 of attacks.
Nawaz Sharif has appointed a four-member committee to facilitate the talks.

North Korea's ambassador to China says his country agrees six-party talks need to resume, calling on the United States to fulfill27 its obligations.

However, Chi says as long as the nuclear threat from outside continues, North Korea has to strengthen its nuclear program.
He has also warned against joint U.S.-South Korean military exercises which are scheduled for February and March.

The Hong Kong government has declared a sanction against the Philippines.
The move is over Manila's refusal to apologize over a hostage tragedy three years ago.
Eight Hong Kong tourists were killed and seven others injured after an hours-long standoff between police and a bus hijacker33 who himself was a dismissed police officer.
The sanction, which is set to take effect early next month, will suspend the 14-day visa-free treatment for some Philippine nationals.
Hong Kong chief CY Leung says his government will take further actions if needed.
