Cindy White tells her friend, Eric Ernsberger, about being1 diagnosed2 HIV positive shortly3 after meeting her life partner, Dan Driggers
I met Dan, the true love of my life in August of 1990 and about 6 weeks later.
This phone call came from my ex-husband. So I called Dan and said,"hey" My ex-husband says that he’d tested positive for HIV, what do you think? Dan says , I can’t get HIV, just go get tested. So I went out of the organic4 conscious5 to get tested and about 3 weeks later. The doctor’s office called me in and said,“ Dear Cindy, calm down and just give a small blood and it won’t take a few minutes and we’ll get you on your way.
So they had me come in and I will never forget that room. There is a wastepaper basket on the floor, a box of clean excellent glass of water on the desk. And the doctor said, “I just get to tell you they choose the first woman I’ve ever had to say this to you and I hope the very last, your test came back positive for HIV.”
I started to check in the meaning she said the words to me. In fact, she came over and held on to me for about 5 minutes because I was crying so hard. Then the next thought was I gotta to tell Dan.
When he got diagnosed HIV positive, he told me to knock off the guilt6 thing, in that that’s hard to take when you are the one who has dealt out the disease7 but Dan's for us, for about the life was that we only have this one to live and that no matter what this life was about we were gonna live it to the fullest we could, and even the days we were sick, and don’t ever remember those days being so fright8 with illness that there wasn’t something we either smile about or held between us.
He passed away in the morning of December 26th of 2001. He promised he wouldn’t die on Christmas ‘cause he didn’t want to mess9 Christmas up for us. You know, falling in love does not save us from the bad things gonna happen in the world. Yet I don’t believe I am here because of anything less than his love for me. I miss him all the time.
