 The Federal Opposition¹ is calling for a fresh election after the Prime Minister suspended the backbench MP Craig Thomson from the Labor² Party. The move is aimed at restoring confidence in the Parliament. Mr  Thomson is moving to the crossbenchers, but says he'll still vote with the Government.

 

The Queensland government is preparing new gun crime laws following a shooting inside a crowded Gold Coast shopping centre. A 53-year-old female bystander is recovering in hospital after being shot. Police say two men involved in the shooting are linked to bikie gangs.

 

A new report says the private rental³ market is failing nearly seven million Australians on low incomes. Anglicare says people on the minimum wage need at least two incomes to pay the rent. Anglicare has called for more public housing and changes to the tax treatment to the family home.

 

New South Wales police say they have laid nearly 1,000 charges during a weekend-long operation targeting gun crime and criminal gangs. A total of 555 people were arrested at the weekend as police raided pubs, clubs and tattoo⁴ parlors⁵.

 

The Melbourne car parts maker⁶ CMI will resume a full-scale production today. CMI's factory was shut down last week following a rental dispute. The company then went into voluntary administration. The dispute forced Ford⁷ to suspend car production for three days due to a lack of CMI stock.
