 Fire fighters are bracing¹ for a new threat today as soaring temperatures return to the southern states. There will be a total fire ban across New South Wales, Victoria and the ACT. Fire authorities are warning residents in the affected² areas to remain vigilant³ and prepare for the worst.

 

 

The government will today announce the terms of reference for the Royal Commission on child sexual abuse. It's expected to create a special investigation⁴ unit to work with police to fast-track (咳,excuse me) individual cases. 

 

 

Coordinated⁵ bomb attacks have killed at least 100 people and injured many more in Pakistan. In the city of Quetta, bombs struck a marketplace and a snooker hall. Another attack on the city of Mingora targeted a religious gathering⁶.

 

 

A new study has found that a staggering 50 per cent of the world's food goes to waste. The British Institution of Mechanical Engineers says the waste is caused by poor storage, strict sell-by-dates, bulk offers and consumer fussiness⁷.

 

 

Australia will have a strong showing at this year's Academy Awards. Hugh Jackman has been nominated for best actor in Les Miserables. And it adds to his best nomination⁸ yesterday. The musical is also in line for best picture. Other big contenders are Steven Spielberg's presidential drama Lincoln, starring best actor nominee⁹ Daniel Day Lewis and Ang Lee's Life of Pi.
