 Leading the News. The ABC's managing director Mark Scott has broken his silence on the Q and A controversy¹, defending the broadcaster as being on Australia's side. Communications minister will oversee² a government inquiry³ into the program, which featured a former terror suspect. In a speech in Melbourne last night, Mr. Scott hit back saying the ABC is a public not a state broadcaster. The ABC is clearly Australian. It's on the side of Australia. The A in ABC is for Australian. 

This was a very, very grave error of judgement, and the management has to take responsibility for it, and that there should be consequences. 

 

 

Independent superfunds are facing a major shake-up to their corporate⁴ governance under contentious⁵ reforms to be announced today. Under the draft legislation, the funds will be required to have an independent chairman. Independent directors will also need to make up at least a third of the boards. 

 

 

Federal coalition⁶ MPs are downplaying speculation⁷ of an early election as their head off on their 6-week mid-winter break. And a man has suffered serious burns after a heater exploded on Sydney's north shore overnight. He was refueling the heater with methylated spirits when it blew up. Two other men were also hurt.
