After reports of possible food contamination caused a scare in Henan province last month, local officials are saying there's nothing to fear. Cui Wenjun, head of a district-level environmental protection bureau in the city of Xinxiang, confirmed that some wheat fields in the city had indeed been tainted1 with the toxic2 chemical cadmium. But he told Caixin the local government has collected all contaminated crops, contradicting earlier reports that the tainted wheat had already hit markets.
Xinxiang's cadmium controversy3 made news last month, when a member of the environmental protection NGO “Airman” reported to the provincial4 environment department that industrial waste from a battery factory had leached5 into local farmland. Airman volunteer Tian Jing said she took wheat samples from fields near two battery plants in Xinxiang over a one-year period starting last June. The batteries made at the plants contain the toxic heavy metals nickel and cadmium. Tian said one sample taken directly outside the factory's walls contained 34.1 times the normal level of cadmium. She also claimed that some of the poisoned crops might have already entered markets.
But Cui said he believed the district government had gathered the tainted wheat. He said the contaminated farmland had been under inspection6 since 2012, and claimed that the government bought up the wheat to prevent it from being sold. He also said the amount of wheat grown in high-risk plots was relatively7 small. Airman, the NGO that discovered the cadmium contamination, said it is investigating the government's claims.
The district government is working to safely dispose of tainted crops and reduce cadmium levels in the soil, Cui told Caixin. He said the government is considering turning cadmium-tainted wheat into ethanol and starch8 for industrial use.
Cadmium, which has been widely confirmed to cause cancer in humans, is one of the 10 chemicals considered a “major public health concern” by the World Health Organization. It's caused major headaches in China in recent years. Farmers in Zhejiang and Guangxi provinces suffer from a weakness of the legs, likely caused by eating cadmium-contaminated rice, a Caixin probe found.
A 2014 survey by the Ministry9 of Environmental Protection and the Ministry of Land Resources showed that over 19 percent of all Chinese farmland had been contaminated by chemicals including cadmium.
