Journalist: When you realized that, you woke up and you heard that we were 1)striking at 2)Afghanistan, on behalf of New York City, your 3)reaction?
Giuliani: I felt a sense of relief that we were that the plan that the President has put together very patiently, very carefully. We have lots of support all around the world that was finally unfolding and we were doing the things that we have to do to defend ourselves.
Journalist: It was the attack on New York down that way, the attack on New York that 4)triggered what happened today in Afghanistan?
Giuliani: Well, there’s no question, every time you go down there and you look at the sight, you’re full of a sense of horror and anger that someone could do this. And the reality is you also have a fear that they’re going to do it again unless we do the things necessary to stop them. I think President Bush is doing the things that are necessary to defend this country. This is being done in self-defense.
Journalist: What can they do again? The 5)CIA says the chances are 100 percent that they’re going to come after us with another big surprise.
Giuliani: We have to try to 6)anticipate everything possible. Prepare for everything possible and then just be ready. I mean the fact is we can’t anticipate everything.
Journalist: What do you - of course you can’t - what do you expect might be next from the other side if you were Osama bin2 Laden3...
Giuliani: Thank goodness I’m not. The reality is that you 7)go through all the possibilities and you just prepare for them. You prepare for the possibility of some form of bombing, some form of chemical or 8)biological attack.
Journalist: Are we prepared for a chemical or biological attack in this city?
Giuliani: We’re as prepared as we can be.
Journalist: Some scientists we’ve talked to say the 9)drills are not going to do a bit of good for this reason, that we will not know that there’s been an attack of 10)anthrax or 11)small pox until days later.
Giuliani: Well that’s why you have to have a monitoring system, an early warning system. You have to 12)keep track of your hospitals, you have to keep track of your doctors, you have to keep track of your 13)pharmacies4, you have to pick up any unusual number of cases in which the early 14)symptoms are being recorded and the reality is that, 15)hopefully you can pick it up. And people should relax about it and calm down about it rather than getting overexcited about it. We should not be overexciting people about this, we should be making them calm. Everything is being done that can be done. There are certain things that you just have to accept as risks in life and then 16)go about your life and lead it. Look at these people, they’re all out here. They’re not afraid, they’re part of you know, the land of the free and the home of the brave. And they’re going to go about and they’re going to lead their lives, and these are possibilities, let the scientists, the President, the governor, the mayor, the military and everybody else worry about it and go about your life and live it.CE
CE
