The Unwanted Gift

一份不想要的礼物

The office was¹ having a Secret² Santa party.

办公室办了个神秘圣诞老人的派对，

Everyone had³ to bring a gift for someone⁴ else.

每个人都要带一件礼物送给另一个人。

First, Bob opened his gift.

包柏第一个开他的礼物，

It was a nice sweater.

是一件好看的毛衣。

Next it was Cindy's turn.

再来轮到辛迪，

She got⁵ a gift card and loved it!

她收到一张礼物卡，她爱死了！

Finally⁶ it was Peter's turn.

最后终于轮到彼得，

His gift was wrapped⁷ in a long box.

他的礼物是包在一个长盒子里。

Peter opened the box slowly⁸.

彼得慢慢打开盒子，

Everyone was watching.

大家都盯着看。

Inside⁹ the box was a tie.

 

盒子里面是一条领带，

It was from Peter's friend June.

是彼得的朋友琼恩送的。

She bought the tie because Peter liked ties a lot.

她买这条领带因为彼得非常喜欢领带，

He would¹⁰ like this tie, too!

那他也应该会喜欢这条。

Peter smiled at June, but he wasn't happy.

彼得对着琼恩笑了笑，但是他并不高兴。

"This tie looks really ugly," he thought¹¹.

这条领带真丑。他心里这么想。

Still, June was a really nice lady, and Peter wanted to make her happy.

然而琼恩是一位非常和善的女士，彼得想要让她高兴。

If Peter didn't wear the tie, June would feel upset¹².

如果彼得不戴这条领带，琼恩可能会难过。

What could¹³ Peter do?

彼得该怎么办？

He didn't want to hurt June's feelings¹⁴.

他不想伤害琼恩的感情。

He could wear the tie to work once.

他可以戴着这条领带去上班一次，

Then she would see it and feel happy.

那她就会看到而觉得开心。

But it was Peter's gift.

但那是给彼得的礼物，

It should make him happy!

它应该要让他开心才对！

If he returned¹⁵ the tie to the store¹⁶, he could get a better one instead¹⁷.

如果他拿这条领带去店里退换，他可以换到一条更好看的，

But then June would feel bad.
