Italy National Team: to Win the Word Cup

 

August 5, former Juventus manager Marcello Lippi signed the contract as new head coach of the National Italian team. Having signed the contract, Lippi said: “At the moment, I hope players, fans and clubs come close to the national team.”

 

In order to prepare for the two World Cup qualifying matches: on September 4th against Norway and on September 8th against Moldova, the head coach Lippi released the players’ names of the new national team on August 29.

 

It's a new squad¹ with a number of changes to the Euro squad. Six Olympic team players: Pelizzoli,Bonera, Ferrari, De Rossi, Pirlo and Gilardino have been included, among which, De Rossi and Gilardino were squad debutants. Del Piero has returned to the squad after the last drop, but Christian² Vieri and Antonio Cassano both dropped for injury. The Palermo forward Luca Toni got his first call up, too.

 

The newcomers of the national team didn't disappoint the head coach and fans. On September 4, De Rossi and Luca Toni each scored in a 2-1 win against Norway. Fans and media celebrated³ the play of the youthful squad and the coach was satisfied too. “It was the start that I was hoping for,” said Lippi.

 

Four days later, another win came. With the winning goal of the Del Piero , Italy defeated Moldova， 1-0. The Juventus striker, who was dropped for the friendly to Iceland in August due to a lack of form¹, justified² his recall to the national team.

 

“Del Piero was decisive³ and I am happy for him and for us, since it was not easy to get rid of the criticism he has received,” the coach said.

 

Lippi also admitted his team were far from convincing. The home side adopted a counter attacking strategy that might have earned them a point had Italy goalkeeper Buffon not been in outstanding form. “We had Buffon to thank for a couple of great saves,” when Lippi talked about the Italy's first choice goalkeeper.

 

The two wins in five days was a success for the new coach, Italy also started a new chapter under him. Now, the Italy national team is doing its best to erase⁴ memories of a sour⁴ first round elimination⁵ from Euro 2004.

 

“I've got two aims,” the boss shared. “To win the World Cup, and put the Italy team back into the hearts of the fans.”
