 Todd: Lois, when are you going back to London, or England?

 

Lois: I'm going back on the 30th of July.

 

Todd: OK, that's coming up pretty soon.

 

Lois: Just four more weeks. Four weeks from today, I'll be on the plane, on my way home.

 

Todd: OK, when you go home, what are you going to do?

 

Lois: In September I'm going back to college because I want to be a primary school teacher in England, so I have to do a one year course to qualify¹ and then hopefully I'll start teaching² the next September back in England.

 

Todd: OK, and what are you going to teach?

 

Lois: So, I'm teaching primary so that's all subjects. I'm teaching science and English and math and maybe some French and sports and music and any other subjects they do at eight years old.

 

Todd: So, how old will the students be?

 

Lois: So I will be trained to teach from 5 to 11, and hopefully I will teach 7 or 8 year olds.

 

Todd: Mm, you like kids?

 

Lois: I hope so. Yeah, when I worked in Prague I taught some children's classes and I really, really enjoyed them, so hopefully I will like it in England as well. Although it will be a bit different because I'll have maybe twenty five or thirty students in a class so it might be slightly different to the twelve when I was in Prague.

 

Todd: That's a lot. What made you decide to become a teacher?

 

Lois: I'm not really sure because my mother was a teacher and she's trying really hard to convince³ me that I shouldn't do it because she thinks its too much work but I enjoy talking to people and being⁴ around children and teaching so hopefully it will be nice for me.

If something will happen 'pretty soon' it will happen in the near future. Notice the following:

one-year course

 

I have to do a one-year course to qualify as a primary school teacher.

 

A 'one-year course' is a class that lasts for one year. We use a number and '-year' to show how long something is. Notice the following:

 

That area of study is a five-year program.

They offer a one-year graduate course.

qualify

 

A one-year course would qualify me as a primary school teacher.

 

Used⁶ like this 'qualify' is like 'provide me with the proper skills or credentials⁷.' Notice the following:

 

I don't think he'll qualify for a scholarship⁸.

What do I have to do to qualify for this job?

trained

 

I will be trained to teach five to eleven-year-old kids.

 

If someone 'trains' you to do something they teach you how to do it and then test your skills.  Notice the following:

 

The first couple of days will be training on the machines and then we will start making jewelry⁹.

Today they trained me on how to do inventory¹⁰ at work.

be around

 

I enjoy talking to people and being around children.

 

To 'be around' children means¹¹ to spend time or interact¹² with them. Notice the following:

 

I don't want to be around people when I'm sick.

It is hard for her to be around a lot of new people.

1 qualify   

vt.取得资格，有资格，限定，描述；vi.取得资格，有资格

参考例句：

• I won't qualify until next year.我明年才具备资格。
• You must qualify yourself for the post.你必须使自己具备担任这一工作的资格。

2 teaching   

n.教学，执教，任教，讲授；(复数)教诲

参考例句：

3 convince

参考例句：

参考例句：

5 vocabulary   

n.词汇，词汇量；词汇表

参考例句：

• How can I widen my vocabulary?怎样扩大自己的词汇量？
• You can find all the new words in the vocabulary of the text.你能在课文的词汇表中找到所有的生词。

6 used   

adj.用旧了的，旧的；习惯于…；过去惯/经常

参考例句：

• I used to work until nearly 6:00 o'clock each day.我过去常常工作到6:00左右。
• He used to walk anywhere from two to five miles an hour.他过去经常一小时走二至五英里。

7 credentials   

n.证明，资格，证明书，证件

参考例句：

• He has long credentials of diplomatic service.他的外交工作资历很深。
• Both candidates for the job have excellent credentials.此项工作的两个求职者都非常符合资格。

8 scholarship   

n.学问，学术成就，奖学金

参考例句：

• The girl who won the scholarship was quite outstanding.得奖学金的女孩是相当杰出的。
• I made up my mind to apply for a scholarship.我决定申请奖学金。

9 jewelry   

n.（jewllery）（总称）珠宝

参考例句：

• The burglars walked off with all my jewelry.夜盗偷走了我的全部珠宝。
• Jewelry and lace are mostly feminine belongings.珠宝和花边多数是女性用品。

10 inventory   

n.详细目录，存货清单

参考例句：

• Some stores inventory their stock once a week.有些商店每周清点存货一次。
• We will need to call on our supplier to get more inventory.我们必须请供应商送来更多存货。

11 means   

n.方法，手段，折中点，物质财富

参考例句：

• That man used artful means to find out secrets.那人使用狡猾的手段获取机密。
• We must get it done by some means or other.我们总得想办法把它干完。

12 interact   

vi.相互作用，相互影响，互通信息

参考例句：

• All things are interrelated and interact on each other.一切事物互相联系并相互作用。
• The policeman advised the criminal to interact with the police.警察劝罪犯与警方合作。
