His friends and family call him "Big Feng" because he is very tall and played basketball as1 a young man. But he is also big in a different way- he fights2 hard to protect3 China's past. His real4 name is Feng Jicai and he has written many novels5 about life6 in China. Several7 years ago, however8, he put down his pen for a while9 and began to protect the cultural10 relics11 in Tianjin, where he lives. Once someone12 asked him why he no longer wrote13. He replied14 that at the moment he felt protecting15 cultural relics was16 more important17.
Feng loves his hometown18. He believes19 that old things must be given20 a place next to new things, or people will soon forget their great past. He does not make speeches21 to get others22 to help him in his projects24. Instead25 he goes out and does what he can himself26. If others follow him, so much the better. One of his biggest projects was to protect the oldest street in Tianjin. Along27 that street some shops had28 done business29 for seven hundred years. Although30 the city government31 rebuilt32 this street, they did34 save35 its oldest building. Another project23 was more successful36: he persuaded37 the city government to buy some land38 in the centre39 of the city so it could40 not be sold41 for businesses42. This area43 is very important for the history of Tianjin. It was here that the city was first built33 during44 the Song Dynasty45. Later46 many treasures47 were found48 here.
To Feng, digging49 down into the earth50 is like reading51 page after page of a book. Each dynasty found in the earth is like an interesting story. Not long ago he and other writers52 and artists53 took54 photos of the old parts55 of Tianjin. The photos were put into a book which was very popular56. The money from the book helps his projects. Once, an old man asked Feng to sign the book for him, saying57 he would58 give it to his grandson59 who was not yet60 born61. Feng was glad to do it - he knows that the past is not only for us to enjoy but also for the children of the future62.
