After hailing a taxi in great haste, I went to my favorite hamburger place. I only wanted to have a quick bite, before going home to face the mountain of work lying around the apartment in a haphazard way . my girlfriend nancy was coming home later, so I picked up a hamburger for her as well.
Nancy had asked I stop at the hardware store on my way home to pick up some odds7 and ends including a handful of screws to hand the paintings. While there I remembered the special glue would come in handy in fixing my broken shelf and stool. Though we’ve been together for 3 months. We were hampered8 in getting settled, due to our work.
Nancy was already home when I arrived. After opening the bag from the hardware store, she instantly became angry and started to say some very harsh words to me. It seems I had forgotten an important item she had wanted me to get. I can’t blame her for being annoyed, but still, I didn’t think I deserved such harassing9 from her. I decided10 this was not a good harbinger of the future for us. Nancy has a childhood handicap, which gives her a hardy spirit, but also makes her overly sensitive in many situations.
There was no safe harbor in our small, cramped11 apartment, stilll, I really was in no mood to continue to haggle with her. It seemed she had harnessed her pent-up frustrations12 and energies of the past 3months to hurl13 angry words at me. I wondered how I could harmonize our moods and feelings for each other. All I wanted was to harvest a harmonic relationship with her.
I tried to bring harmony to the situation, and halt the argument, but, all was in vain, as my efforts were hampered by nancy’s temper, which is her hallmark, and by her sour mood, it seemed a harmonious relationship was more distant than ever. Perhaps a peaceful habitat with nancy was only a hallucination. After all.
