Devil的意思是“魔鬼”。在基督教文化里，魔鬼时候背板上帝的邪恶之灵，被正义的天使大败，驱逐出天堂。从此魔鬼就在地狱称王，并承认人间的万恶之源。
Raise的意思是“惹起，使出现”。从在面上看，raise the devil的意思就是“让牛鬼蛇神都出笼，闹得鸡犬不宁”，引申为“暴跳如雷，大叫大骂”或“大声训斥一个人”。
