消息

There was still no word from John.
还是没有John的消息。

There's no word from the visa office.
签证处没有消息。

② Word gets out/around
大家都会知道的

It's a very small town and if you do something bad, word gets around.
这是个小地方，如果你做了什么坏事，大家都会知道的。

Word gets around. Don't do it.
这个事会传出去的。不要做。

③ The word is (that) /word has it (that)
据说

The word is that the two companies are planning a merger¹.
据说那两家公司正计划合并呢。

The word is that he never takes showers.
据说他从不洗澡。

④ Spread/pass the word
把话或消息传出去

We are having a party. Spread the word.
我们马上要开一个派对，把消息传出去。

Health officials are encouraging people to spread the word about the benefits of exercise.

⑤ Somebody's words
某人的话/或写的字
