每天三分钟学英语 第539期:英文Down the street并不是在街下面的意思!

在国外“问路”时，要怎么开口呢？简明又礼貌的描述你的目的地：

游客A: Excuse me sir, is Plaza¹ Mall down this street? According to my map, it should be right here.

先生打扰一下，请问广场购物中心是在这条街上吗？我看地图，应该就在这里。

路人B: You got the wrong street. Plaza Mall is still a couple blocks down.

你走错街道了。广场购物中心还要往前走几个街区。

Down the street

在这条街上

通常down和along比较像，指“沿着这条街”，所以当说down the street时，一般就是指“面朝”或“手指”的方向。

举两个例子：

① It's ok. I can walk. My hostel² is down the street.

没关系，我可以走路过去。我住的青旅就在这条街上。

② There's a pharmacy³ down the street from where I'm staying.

我住的地方那条街上有一家药店。

我们不仅会“问路”，还要能听懂对方的“指路”，尤其是当我们走错路时：

举两个例子：

① I must have gotten the wrong address because there's no bars near me.

我肯定是把地址搞错了，因为我附近没有酒吧。

② You got the wrong place. This is the bookstore we went to last time.

你走错地方了。这是我们上次去的那家书店。

A couple blocks down

再过几个街区

这里的down就是：指路人“手指”或“面朝”的方向啦。

国外的blocks（街区）之间通常是由比较宽的马路隔开。

举几个例子：

① We're close. The Museum of Modern Art is just a couple blocks down.

我们快到了。再走几个街区就到现代艺术博物馆了。

② The campus is still a couple blocks down. If you're tired, we can take the bus.

还有几个街区才到校园。如果你累了，我们可以做公交车。

1 plaza   

n.广场，市场

参考例句：

• They designated the new shopping centre York Plaza.他们给这个新购物中心定名为约克购物中心。
• The plaza is teeming with undercover policemen.这个广场上布满了便衣警察。

2 hostel   

n.（学生）宿舍，招待所

参考例句：

• I lived in a hostel while I was a student.我求学期间住在青年招待所里。

3 pharmacy   

n.药房，药剂学，制药业，配药业，一批备用药品

参考例句：

• She works at the pharmacy.她在药房工作。
• Modern pharmacy has solved the problem of sleeplessness.现代制药学已经解决了失眠问题。
