A polio vaccination5 program is underway across the middle east.Following the outbreak of war in Syria,the paralysing disease has been found in several countries where it was once eradicated6.NPR's Alex XX reports.
The UN announced that the campaign was attempted to vaccinate7 more than 20 million children in Syria,Iraq and Egypt in the next 5 days.Until last year,polio had been eliminated in every country except Afghanistan,Pakistan and Nigeria.Islamist militants8 have hindered vaccination programs in those countries.But in Syria,a Pakistani-strain of the virus was discovered in October last year.Since then,27 children have been paralysed by polio there.Then,in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad,a baby was found to be paralysed by polio last month.Officials say the vaccination drive is urgently needed to halt further spread of the virus.Alex Gordon,NPR news.Beirut.
