Don: OK, I guess.

Yael: What's wrong?

Don: Well, I've been getting headaches lately, and my neck and shoulders are kinda sore.

Yael: It sounds like you have the classic symptoms of computer vision syndrome¹.

Don: Really? I can see why staring at a computer screen might strain my eyes for some reason, but why would that make my neck and shoulders sore?

Yael: Because when you spend hours at a time at a computer, if you're not careful you can put a lot of strain on your entire body. So, for example, our eyes are good at focusing on the sharp black and white contrast of printed stuff like a newspaper. But characters on a computer screen aren't so well defined or sharp, so our eyes have to work harder just to focus. That strains the eye muscles and can cause headaches.

Don: OK. But there's nothing I can do about that, right?

Yael: True, but you can make things easier on your eyes. I'm guessing that your monitor is at eye level, right?

Don: Yep. And I try to sit up straight when I'm typing.

Yael: But those things are hurting your eyes. It's easier on the eyes to look down at something, like a book in your lap. Looking straight ahead is more difficult. And sitting up straight puts pressure on the spine². It's actually best to lean back slightly.

雅艾尔：但这样会伤害你的眼睛。眼睛朝下看东西会更容易一些，例如把书放在大腿上看。眼睛直视前方会比较困难。坐直也会给脊椎施加压力。其实最好的坐姿是稍微向后倾斜。

Don: I'll try it. I've also heard the using artificial tears and taking a break from staring at the screen helps.
