Hello, I am Naamua Delaney at the CNN Center in Atlanta. And here is a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
President-elect Obama says he hopes Governor Rod Blagojevich will spare the Illinois legislature of the trouble of impeaching1 him. Obama insists he has no idea Blagojevich was under federal investigation2 on allegations of trying to sell the seat he vacated in the US Senate. The Democratic governor was arrested Tuesday. Obama also says neither he nor any member of his staff has been questioned about the so-called "Pay to play" charges against the governor. The president-elect says Blagojevich should resign.
"I have never spoken to the governor on the subject. I am confident that no representatives of mine would have any part of any deals related to the seat, I think the materials released by the US Attorney reflect that fact."
A 14-billion-dollar package of loans to Detroit automakers that cruised through the House may hit a roadblock in the Senate. Republican opponents argued that any support for the domestic auto3 industry should include significant concessions4 from auto workers and creditors5. They also rejected tougher environmental rules backed by House Democrats6.
Today, the White House endorsed7 the package arguing that the economy can't stand massive new layoffs8. Senate leaders are calling for a quick vote on the rescue package, possibly as soon as today.
The number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefit has hit a 26-year high. The Labor9 Department says first time filing of benefits jumped to 573,000 last week, the most since November of 1982, and that's a way above beyond what economists10 had predicted. The US has lost 1.9 million jobs so far this year.
Breaking news out of Orange County, Florida. The remains11 of a young girl have been found less than half a mile from Caylee Anthony's grandparents' home. However, officials have not said whether the body is missing Florida toddler Caylee Anthony. The Orange County Sheriff’s Office says a utility worker found the remains in a bag early this morning.
