Hi there, I am Brooke Baldwin at the CNN center in Atlanta and here is a look at what's happening Now In The News.
Tonight's debate is a go, that is now official here. The much anticipated face-off between these two gentlemen Senator John McCain and Barack Obama is just hours from happening. McCain announced earlier this week he was backing out work on Federal bailout legislation. Now McCain campaign officials say their candidate will be in Oxford1 , Mississippi tonight. Barack Obama is already in Oxford.
The topic of tonight’s debate is officially foreign policy but the economy, the Federal bailout are sure to be top-of-mind for the candidates this evening. Negotiations2 on the proposed 700-billion-dollar of plan did resume this morning. The Senate appears close to reaching a deal but some House Republicans are not taking part in the negotiations. Many say they want a plan that would use private capital instead of tax dollars to finance the bailout.
And a change in business for Washington Mutual3 customers, those using WaMu are now in business with JPMorgan Chase. The government seized the bank late last night and sold it. Chase paid the FDIC 2 billion dollars for the bank after it failed by in part by selling risky4 mortgages. The Feds say the move will not affect Washington Mutual customers meaning there should be no interruption in your service. JPMorgan by the way bought investment bank Bear Stearns in March.
And plan on a wet weekend, all the way up from the mid5 Atlanta Coast to New England. An northeaster is moving into the Carolinas. Forecasters say it will continue northward6. The storm is already dropping rain from the Carolinas to Massachusetts. And on top of that here we go tropical storm Kyle out in the Atlantic of Bermuda spinning around with winds around 45 miles an hour. Forecasters say the storm could move north to Maine and over Scotia in the next couple of days.
Some good news for you this Friday as far as a gas goes. Here gas prices down for the 9th straight day. AAA is reporting the average price for regular unleaded gas stands at 3.68 a gallon, the cheapest, you got to go to Oklahoma for that at 3.38 and gas prices of 4 bucks7 or more can be found in Alaska. Supply disruptions and high prices certainly continue to plague the southeast however.
And those are the headlines for you this hour. Of course stay with CNN for more on those stories and other news this Friday.
