The Mombasa-Nairobi Railway – linking Kenya's capital with its principal port – has officially opened.It is the first railway having been built since Kenya's independence in December 1963.The operation of Mombasa-Nairobi railway has shortened the transit¹ time from fifteen hours to four and a half, representing a marked improvement in efficiency.Built to "Chinese standards, with Chinese techniques, Chinese facilities and Chinese management", the railway is expected to provide a massive boost to the socio-economic development of the whole region.The 470 kilometer-long railway is the starting part of a new East African Railway Network.
