英国大选结果始料未及,或产生悬浮议会
Welcome to 'Today' - an hour of world news and analysis -- from a different perspective. I'm Suyi.
Official results are suggesting Britain will have a hung parliament, with no party winning majority in the just-concluded snap general election. The Conservative Party has lost their majority while the opposition1 Labor2 Party gained dozens of seats. The result is seen as a humiliation3 for PM Theresa May, as she herself chose to call the election to try to strengthen her power in talks with the EU on Brexit.Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn urged PM May to resign, but she appeared defiant4, saying the country needs a period of stability.Another shock would be Liberal Democrat5 MP Nick Clegg losing his seat to a Labor candidate.A total of 650 MPs were elected, with about 45.8 million people entitled to vote.A party needs 326 seats to have an overall majority.
For more on this, CRI' Suyi is now joined on the line by Prof. Martin John Smith, Head of the Department of Politics at University of York, Mike Bastin, Senior Lecturer at Southampton Solent University, and Visiting Professor at the University of International Business and Economics as well as Dr. Cui Hongjian, Head of European Studies Department, China Institute of International Studies
