 May 16th, 1868In Washington, the U.S. Senate fails by one vote to convict President Andrew Johnson on the first article of impeachment¹ against him. Johnson is eventually acquitted² on all charges, prompted by his clashes with the post Civil War Congress and serves out the rest of his time in office.
