 September 6th, 1901President William McKinley is shot at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo¹, New York. The gunman: Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist² who is executed the following month. Vice³ President Teddy Roosevelt succeeds McKinley when he dies more than a week after the shooting.
