Britain's Prince William is a subject of an intense speculation1 this morning. The tabloids2 are buzzing about whether he is gonna pop the question to his long-time girlfriend. CBS News correspondent Richard Roth reports.
Richard Roth: There's a royal ritual within these photos from Mas Deapth published in the current issue of People Magazine. On their Caribbean vacation Prince William and his girlfriend Kate Middleton have been navigating3 familiar waters, soaking up the sun, and setting off speculation back home where the questions being put--is this a prelude4 to engagement, and the answer seems to be “don’t bet on it.
Victoria Mather: I would say that it was extraordinarily5 unlikely that Prince William and Kate Middleton would get married. But I think what we are seeing is a very modern situation of a fine young man having an extremely nice girlfriend.
Richard Roth: The couple who met at university have dated steadily6 now for several years. She is so silent about the relationship. The presses dub7 Kate "Her Royal Shyness". William said he doesn't want to marry till he is older. Anyway he is busy with six months more training at Sandhurst before his commission for a stint8 in the British army, while Brother Harry9 has been on the adventure vacation with his girlfriend in South Africa. For both boys it may be a case of marriage more on the mind than in the cards.
Victoria Mather: When Prince William's mother married she was 19.And look what'd happened there? It's not a good omen10, is it ?
Richard Roth: No, but it's Britain's about to be reminded in an anniversary of nostalgia11 exactly 25 years ago this summer. It looked awfully12 good at that time. Actually there is a wedding in Prince William and Kath Middleton’s future, but it's tomorrow and it's not theirs. His stepsister Commily's daughter's getting married. The guests may have plenty to talk about.
