The curtain is about to go up on the 59th annual Cannes Film Festival. The annual two-week event draws / blockbuster crowd drama, comedy and a cast of thousands and it always grabs attention. Over the next two weeks, nearly 1, 000 films will be shown or watched by 4500 journalists and over 20, 000 other accredited1 delegates. The Da Vinci Code opens Cannes with its world premiere on Wednesday. The film festival will end with a presentation of the Golden Palm, and a host of lesser2 prizes. They re decided3 by a jury headed by acclaimed4 Chinese filmmaker Wang Kar-Wei. Early, runners for the top prize include Sofia Coppola, competing at Cannes for the first time with Marie-Antoinette. It s a biopic of the French queen starring Kirsten Dunst in the title role. Also competing as Pedro Almodovar, the Oscar winning Spainish director known for a twisted essential comedy set in modern Spain. His entry is Volver which is Spanish for the verb return. Oscar winner Oliver Stone will offer a glimpse of his upcoming 9/11's drama World Trade Center.
Meanwhile, Paul Greengrass's United 93 plays out of competition. The festival runs through May 28th.
