I have a 45, it's 45 plus"
High SPF, high protection, right? En, not exactly. That SPF number indicates protection from burning UVB rays, but says nothing about blocking UVA rays which can cause wrinkle, sunspots, and cancer. Rules proposed today would change that.
"It's gonna give people we believe easy to understand information about how much protection to expect for both kinds of UV light"
The FDA is proposing a four-star system. One star, low UVA protection. Four stars, the most protection to go right on the label next to the SPF. Sunscreens providing little or no UVA protection would be required to state that too. Currently there are no standards. A recent test of 800 sunscreens revealed:
"Many pro(ducers), manufactures who are claiming broad spectrum1 UVA protection aren't actually providing strong protection for consumers"
The new rules would also require sunscreens claiming to be waterproof2 or water- resistant3 to state exactly how many minutes they last in the water.
"When I go outside usually I reapply it like two or three times"
But the rules won't go into effect for at least a couple of years. So in the meantime, research your sunblock to make sure your family is getting the protection promised on the bottle. Nancy Cordes, CBS news, Washington.
