Welcome to Indonesia's green market in mobile phone. This is a great typical mall, it's a kind of, like electronics bazaar1 with stalls everywhere, selling the latest in mobile phones at cut rate prices and it's pretty clear who the market winner is-Blackberry. They beat the iPhone hands down. In fact, telecommunication2 research groups believe that there are five times as many Blackberries sold as IPhones.
This seller tells us it's because the Blackberry caters3 for everyone from the top to the bottom and in between and there's a great variety of prices, he says.
One reason is price. The Blackberry is far cheaper than the iPhone. In fact, the Blackberry sells here for about $500 and iPhone sells for about $900 and it's especially cheaper if you buy one that's been smuggled4 in tax free. In fact, research groups believe that most of the Blackberries bought in Indonesia are bought on the gray market.
All my friends have Blackberries, that's why I'm buying one. This customer tells us.
Indonesia's Internet infrastructure5 is also still quite patchy. It's expensive and not very reliable to get a broadband connection, but getting a mobile phone that's web enabled is easy and cheap. And also, Indonesians love to chat and send text messages, so they like Blackberry's keyboards,so they can quickly send messages out. And there is only room to grow in this market, research groups estimate that by next year, about half of Indonesia's 240 million strong population will have a mobile phone.
