Elizabeth Taylor first burst onto the big screen at the age of 10 with the lead role in "Lassie, Come Home". After a string of girl-next-door role, she showed her first hint of dramatic promise in "A Place in the Sun". She confirmed that potential in 1958 as Maggie in "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof two years later, she won an Oscar for playing a call girl in "Butterfield 8". The following year, she was paid one million to star in the title role of "Cleopatra". What some say is the role for what she would be remembered. In 1967, Oscar came calling again after her portrayal1 of an alcoholic2 Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf".
But her image as a pure violet-eyed girl was overshadowed by unending series of headlines about her eight marriages, weight and
addictions3.
Taylor was only 18 when she married 21-year-old hotel heir Conrad Nicky Hilton. And that first marriage only lasted 205 days. One year later, she
wedded4 British actor Michael Wilding who was twice her age. The union lasted four years and produced two children. Her tore love affair with actor Richard Burton made the most headlines also marked her fifth and sixth marriages. After divorcing Burton for a second time, Taylor did not stay single for long. In 1976, she married former Navy Secretary John Warner. Life in Washington did not appeal to Taylor and they divorced in 1982. "I'm 60 years old today." Over the course of 7 years, Taylor
innate5 rehabs three times. During her stay at the Betty
Ford6 Clinic in 1990, she met her seventh husband, a construction worker. Despite many columns the union is mismatched, the marriage lasted for over four years. Taylor was especially closed to pop star Michael Jackson, saying she gravitated toward him because we were very much alike; we both had horrible childhoods. One of her last public appearances was at his funeral in 2009. Near the end of her life, she
devoted7 her time to AIDS-related charities and fund raising. Taylor is 79 years old.
