Read the text carefully and be prepared to answer the question:
Respect
In a society that values independence and growth, those in authority often need to earn the people's respect. Respect is given to those in authority based on their ability, instead of an automatic response to how old, wise or respectable1 they are. Older people are often seen as outdated2. Young people are more likely to have clearer ideas about what the future might hold. Nowadays, many American adults would rather ask their children instead of their parents for advice before making a decision!
