No Money for Presents
Madge's friend: What's the matter?
Madge: You mean beside the fact that it's Christmas Eve and I haven't done any shopping and even if I did, I couldn't buy what I want because what I want is something special and all the money I have in the world is one dollar and 87 cents.
Friend: Yeah. Besides that?
Madge: Nothing!
Friend: Oh, listen, sweetie. Who's this present for, anyway?
Madge: My Guy.
Friend: Your guy? Does your husband know about this?
Madge: Guy is my husband.
Friend: Oh - that Guy.
Madge: I wanted to get him something really nice this Christmas and I can't.
Friend: Well, if you don't have the cash¹ on hand, uh, ooh I know, you could bake² some cookies and sell them down by the market.
Madge: We sold the stove³ to pay the car insurance⁴.
Friend: Okay, you could use the car to make deliveries⁵.
Madge: Sold the car to cover medical bills.
Friend: Oh. Furniture?
Madge: Dentist.
Friend: Jewelry⁶?
Madge: Taxes⁷.
Friend: Books?
Madge: Harvey.
Friend: Harvey?
Madge: Guy's cousin Harvey. You think we're poor ... what am I going to do?
Friend: Oh, come on, cheer up, sweetie.

1 cash

2 bake
