Coming to you from Venice, this week, because a film festival in one of the most beautiful cities in the world is now in full swing. It’s not only the oldest film gathering² in the world, it’s also one of the most important. It opened last week with “Pirates of the Caribbean” star, Keira Nightly, and “Last King of Scotland” ‘star James McAvoy on the red carpet with the very well received atonement. And since then almost everybody from Brad Pitt and Charlie Therone to George Clooney have been arriving on the island in their water taxis. Joining me earlier on his mobile phone from the Lido at the heart of the festival, was film critic Jason Solomons.

JASON SOLOMONS: I’m in the casino where this is the main place that the festival takes place, the press conferences, the films unspool, the press run around, the great sort of 20’s building built by Mussolini to kind of show, show Italy at its best.

THE HOST: Tell me films, which have you seen so far that have impressed you.

JASON SOLOMONS: Brad Pitt! Because he actually produced and starred in “The Assassination³ of Jesse James” by the Coward Robert Forbes, which is a beautiful, long western, bit too long in my opinion, but Brad Pitt gives a great sense of central performance as the outlaw⁴ Jesse James, a great performance by Cassey Affleck too as the coward Robert Forbes. It’s a western set in the 1880’s about how Jesse James and Mist began and it’s a film about Mist and it’s a really beautiful film with a score by the Australian Nick Cayes as well, so I think that will be an Oscar favorite. And also, in fact, George Clooney, in an investigative reporter kind of drama. He plays a lawyer fixer in a corporate⁵ firm in America who sided on the, who realizes he’s on the side of the bad guys. It’s a film called “Michael Clayton” and I think we’ll be seeing more of that. It’s a very intense, kind of clammy film.

詹森?所罗门斯：布拉德?彼特！他在《刺杀神枪侠》当中表演很出色。《刺杀神枪侠》是一部西部故事片，影片很长，我甚至看得有点不耐烦了，不过布拉德?彼特扮演的亡命徒杰士?詹姆斯的角色是整个影片的亮点。另一位男主角卡西?阿弗莱特饰演了懦夫罗伯特?福特，他的表演同样也是可圈可点。这部影片以19世纪80年代的美国西部为背景，影片讲述了杰士?詹姆斯如何开展劫富济贫又是如何遭遇刺杀的，整部影片都是围绕着刺杀这个谜团展开的，场景非常的美，来自澳大利亚的评委尼克?卡伊斯也对这点赞赏有加。我想，奥斯卡应该十分青睐这样的影片。除此之外，乔治?克鲁尼在一部推理类影片当中的表演也给我留下了很深的印象，他扮演了美国一个合作法律公司的律师，却发现他不得不违背良心站在坏人这一边，影片的名字叫《迈克尔?克雷顿》，我想我们还会再仔细的观看一下这部影片，它是一部非常紧张、晦涩的剧情片。

THE HOST: “Brokeback Mountain”, of course, is one of the big winners at Venice. Ang Lee is back this year, isn’t he, with “Lust, Caution”, what, what’s that like?

主持人：《断臂山》曾是第62届威尼斯电影节的大赢家，导演李安今年又带着自己最新的作品《色，戒》再次来到了威尼斯，您对这部影片的评价如何？

JASON SOLOMONS: The return of Ang Lee was greatly anticipated here, as you say. “Lust, Caution” is a, is a really beautiful spy thriller⁶ set in occupied Shanghai in World War II in which a young budding actress has to put her skills to the test by seducing⁷ a spy, Tony Leung, a magnificent actor from Wang Kar Wai’s “In the Mood for Love.” And this was a Chinese language return for Ang Lee, but this one, although it didn’t have all the sex in”Brokeback Mountain”, he saved it all for “Lust, Caution”. The film had these amazingly sexy scenes between his new actress Tang Wei and Tony Leung. Many people thought that some of the sex that was put on camera was actually real so it caused some controversy⁸. It’s a very brave film from Ang Lee to make a film about his home country that most of his home country won’t be able to see, however, we got the privilege of seeing it here.

詹森?所罗门斯：如你所说，李安重返威尼斯电影节的确是倍受瞩目。《色，戒》是一部惊心动魄的关于间谍的影片，以二战期间被占领的上海为背景。女主角虽然初出茅庐但她的表演极赋技巧，她把引诱汉奸过程中复杂的心理状态表现的淋漓尽致，梁朝伟饰演了这个汉奸，他在王家卫导演的《花样年华》中有过出色的表演。继王家卫之后，李安又把华语影片带到了威尼斯。如果大家觉得《断臂山》中的性爱场面还不过瘾的话，那么在《色，戒》当中可以欣赏到更为细致精彩的性爱画面。在摄影机的拍摄下，男主角梁朝伟和女主角汤唯展现了极为真实的性爱场面，这也使得影片倍受争议。这部影片是导演李安的一个大胆尝试，他想讲述一个关于他的祖国中国的故事，但是大部分中国内地观众可能无缘看到影片的完整版，然而我们却有幸在威尼斯电影节欣赏了这部影片。

THE HOST: Any sense at this point of who’s going to be the big winner?

主持人：那么，您感觉哪部电影能够胜出呢？

JASON SOLOMONS: It’s very hard to predict. I must say all of the big surprises, good old British veteran socialist⁹ Ken¹⁰ Loach, with his film, “It’s a Free World” about the migrant workers in London. That went down extremely well with the Italians. As has “Brian’s Apartment” a new film about Iraq redacted which seems to be hailed as a masterpiece by some. I think that the best film that I’ve seen here, and I hope that will win the Golden Lion and could well go on to win Oscars, is Paul Haggis, the man who wrote and directed “Crash” a couple of years ago which has won an Oscar. I think he’ll be back in the frame again with a film called “In the Valley of Elah” which is the one that stars Tommy Lee Jones. It’s about an American family looking for their son, who’s gone missing after returning to America after duty in Iraq. And I thought this is a deeply cynical¹¹ film about war, but a deeply moving one about the impact it having on families. We’ll miss it if Tommy Lee wins best actor and the film goes on to win an Oscars as well as the Golden Lion itself.
