In 2010 his ship was hijacked1 on a trip between Dubai and Mogadishu by Somali pirates. They killed one crew member and subjected the rest to mental and physical torture. The pirates grew increasingly frustrated2 by their failure to contact the ship's owner, and so they began calling Jawaid's wife, Shahnaz. Shahnaz and her daughters Nareman and Mishal began a public campaign to secure the release of the crew. After agonizingly drawn-out negotiations3, the pirates eventually freed seven hostages, including Captain Jawaid.
