British Lt. Gen. Nick Parker to lead foreign forces(在线收听

WASHINGTON, June 23 (Xinhua) -- The White House announced Wednesday that British Lieutenant General Nick Parker would serve as acting Commander of NATO's International Security Assistance(援助) Force in Afghanistan until a new U.S. Commander is confirmed by Congress(国会), as the former commander Stanley McChrystal is relieved of duty.
U.S. President Barack Obama on Wednesday called British Prime Minister David Cameron, and Cameron confirmed the Briton's stand- in. Obama has accepted McChrystal's resignation earlier in the day. McChrystal lost his job because of disparaging remarks he and his aides made about senior administration officials including Obama himself.
Obama has nominated General David Petraeus, commander of U.S. Central Command, to take over the war in Afghanistan. He told Cameron he intends to have the Senate to confirm Petraeus as swiftly as possible.
Parker has served as Deputy Commander to ISAF since September, 2009. He has asked Cameron to tell Obama the war in Afghanistan " would not miss a beat."(本文由在线英语听力室整理编辑)
