1. Former Senate Ted Stevens and at least 4 others have been killed in a plane crash near a remote fishing village in Alaska. Former NASA chief Sean O'Keefe and his son were also on the plane but survived the crash.

 

2. A combative Charles Rangel has taken to the House floor to demand that the ethics committee not leave him "swinging in the wind". The New York Democrat, who is charged with 13 ethics violations, is demanding an expedited hearing of his case.

 

3. A New York judge has granted bail for a JetBlue flight attendant accused of cursing out a passenger over the plane's loudspeakers, grabbing some beer from the galley, and exiting on the emergency slide. JetBlue has suspended Steven Slater who is charged with criminal mischief, reckless endangerment and trespassing.

 

4. A federal fishing ban has been lifted for more than 5,000 square miles in the Gulf of Mexico along the Florida Panhandle. The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration says no oil has been observed in those waters since July 3rd.
