[00:07.16]Diana first met her future husband when she was just a baby.
[00:11.10]It happened during the winter of 1961, when twelve-year-old Charles,

[00:42.33]It was a cold, rainy, bleak afternoon when sixteen-year-old Diana,
[00:47.26]dressed in a borrowed parka that was too large for her,
[00:50.54]boots, and blue jeans, crossed the field to meet the heir to the British throne.
[00:55.46]It was almost twilight when the two came face to face near Nobottle Woods.

[01:06.95]finally meet the most eligible bachelor in England,
[01:09.94]though she was not impressed with his five-foot-ten-inch height,

[01:17.02] But Diana would later say that she admired his beautiful blue eyes.

[01:23.69] he thought Diana was "a very jolly and attractive" girl,

[01:37.04]when she acted as a bridesmaid for her sister Jane's wedding that April.
[01:40.97] It was the first major social occasion that Diana attended as a young woman.
[01:45.90] And many of the royals were surprised at
[01:48.08]how beautiful and mature the once-gawky girl had become.
[01:52.12]Even the Queen Mother, Prince Charles's grandmother,
[01:55.41] noticed Diana's beauty, grace, and charm.
[01:58.47]She complimented the Earl on the fine job he had done in bringing Diana up.
[02:03.06]When Charles went to Switzerland for a ski vacation,
[02:06.35]Diana missed him terribly. He called her after a day or two,
[02:10.39] and told Diana he had something important to ask her.
[02:13.89]He arrived home on February 3, 1981.
[02:17.72]Three days later, he arranged to see Diana at Windsor Castle. Late that evening,
[02:23.84] while Prince Charles was showing Diana the nursery, he asked her to marry him.
[02:29.31]To his surprise, Diana treated his proposal as a joke,
[02:33.47] she actually giggled. But soon she could see that Prince Charles was serious.

[02:41.99]that told her she would never be Queen, she accepted his proposal.
