1. North Carolina officials are ordering tourists and residents to leave a barrier island that is only accessible by ferry. Hurricane Earl was downgraded overnight. It is now a Category 3 storm with 125 miles per hour winds. Forecasters believe the storm may brush the Carolina coast and then race up the Eastern seaboard.
2. President Barack Obama has formally ended the U.S. combat role in Iraq. The president declared Tuesday that, after seven years, it’s time to turn the page. The president says the nation must turn its priorities to fixing the ailing economy.
3. Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski has conceded her Senate primary race to Joe Miller. Murkowski made the concession speech a week after the primary. She trailed Miller by more than 1,600 votes and made only slight gains when absentee ballots were counted.
4. Michael Douglas says he's begun treatment for a throat cancer and his odds of recovery are high. Douglas made the announcement while on the Late Show with David Letterman Tuesday. Douglas says he has at least an 80% chance of recovery. He has already started radiation and chemotherapy |
