1. Hurricane Karl is battering Mexico's Gulf Coast. The storm hit near Veracruz with winds of 150 miles per hour. Karl has already knocked down trees, billboards and power lines, and is now headed to the flood-prone mountainous region.

 

2. Police in London have arrested six people in a suspected terrorist plot against Pope Benedict. Five of the men were arrested at a garbage depot following a tip the police got. However, the arrests have not forced the pontiff to change his plans there.

 

3. Utility crews are hard at work in the Big Apple as that city tries to recover from a fierce storm that hit Thursday. At least one person was killed in the severe thunderstorm, and thousands were left without power.

 

4. Joe Torre is calling it quits. A Los Angeles Dodgers manager announced today that he'll retire at the end of the season. He won four World Series titles while managing the Yankees, and is finishing with more than 2,300 career wins.
