1. A smooth ride to the outside world. That's what Chilean officials expect to start late Tuesday for the first of 33 trapped miners. Officials say the first trapped miner is expected to reach the surface late Tuesday. The miners have survived more than two months about half a mile below ground.

2. Hurricane Paula has strengthened into a Category 2 storm as it roars towards Mexico's resort region of Cancun. Boats are being hauled ashore and water sport businesses are cancelling reservations.

3. It could be the end of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell". A federal judge in California has issued a worldwide injunction stopping enforcement of the policy that has kept gays from serving openly in the US military. The Justice Department has 60 days to appeal.

4. The Obama administration has lifted a six-month moratorium on deepwater drilling that it imposed in the wake of the disastrous BP oil spill. The ban is believed to have caused a temporary loss of up to 12,000 jobs
