[00:09.92]2001: A Space Odyssey marked a turning point
[00:13.21]in science fiction film.
[00:15.09]I've seen it three times
[00:16.41]and I have got a lot out of it even though
[00:18.39]it originally came out in 1968.
[00:20.94]When it first came out,
[00:22.38]a lot of people did not like it,
[00:24.35]they couldn't figure it out,
[00:25.87]they found it strange and confusing.
[00:28.32]At he Hollywood premiere of the film
[00:30.12]a lot of people walked out.
[00:32.01]However, it became very popular,
[00:34.54]particularly among young people.
[00:36.87]It's not easy to explain
[00:38.23]what the film's about.
[00:39.85]I suppose it's to do with an alien civilization
[00:42.40]but you never actually see any aliens.
[00:45.14]The film starts,about four million years ago.
[00:48.04]It is about a group of cavemen
[00:49.84]who find a big black block.
[00:52.10]It's really a strange kind of machine
[00:53.96]that has been deliberately sent to Earth
[00:56.15]by an advanced alien civilization.
[00:58.71]Anyway, the next part of the film happens
[01:01.13]four million year later in the year 2001.
[01:05.22]Two more of these strange,
[01:06.65]black boxes have been found on the Moon
[01:09.18]and a scientist goes there to study them.
