The Prime Minister will attend the inauguration of Indonesia's President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Jakarta today. The leaders are expected to discuss people smuggling and any plans for Indonesia to accept asylum-seekers on their way to Australia.

The government’s demanding the Opposition back up its proposal on emissions trading with detailed costings. The Climate Change Minister Penny Wong met the Opposition leader yesterday. They lay down the foundations for negotiations, but the government first wants to know how much Mr. Turnbull’s amendments will cost.

The votes from more than 200 polling stations in Afghanistan will be declared invalid because of fraud. The UN-backed Electoral Complaints Commission says President Hamid Karzai now does not have enough vote for outright victory. Mr. Karzai could now face a runoff against his nearest rival Abdullah Abdullah.

And firefighters in central Queensland have spent the night backburning around Rockhampton. The bushfire in the Mount Archer National Park has been burning for 11 days. Authorities were concerned the blaze would threaten nearby homes. But the fire slowed down overnight and crews took advantage of the light winds.
