Search efforts will continue today for 11 people missing after a boat sank off the Cocos Islands. One person is dead and 27 others have been rescued. A number of planes have been deployed to search for survivors this morning. The Federal Government won't confirm whether those on board were asylum seekers. A new opinion poll shows support for the Federal Government has slumped in the wake of the ongoing debate over asylum seekers. The Newspoll in The Australian shows the gap between Labor and the Coalition has narrowed by 14 points in the past fortnight. On a two-party preferred basis, Labor now only leads the Coalition 52% to 48%. Opposition frontbencher Joe Hockey says the message to the Prime Minister is clear. But Mr. Rudd has maintained a commanding lead over the Opposition Leader Malcolm Turnbull in the preferred prime minister stakes. And the Melbourne Cup contenders have been going through their final paces at Flemington Race Course this morning before the race bid stops the nation. The two favorites remain Bart Cummings’ Viewed and Jack Steven’s Alcopop.
