Speculation is growing that New South Wales Premier Nathan Rees could be ousted from the top job today. Anti-Rees forces in the party are due to call a special meeting to mount a leadership challenge. Frank Sartor is expected to nominate for the position. Nathan Rees says he'll fight any leadership vote.

A 23-year-old Australian man's been sentenced to 20 years in prison in Bulgaria for murder. Jock Palfreeman was found guilty of stabbing a student to death and wounding another in a fight in December 2007. Palfreeman claimed he acted in self-defense and was trying to rescue a gypsy who was being bashed by a group of soccer fans.

And the Federal Opposition says the Rudd Government's emissions trading scheme will face almost certain defeat if it’s reintroduced to the Senate for a third time. The Government says it wants the Senate to debate the bill again in February. But Opposition leader Tony Abbott says there's very little chance the Coalition would approve the bill. And Nationals senator Barnaby Joyce who looks set to be elevated to the Coalition's new-look frontbench has challenged the government to call an earlier election.
