Millions of people are getting ready to celebrate Australia Day. The only Australian woman to receive the Nobel Prize for Medicine, Elizabeth Blackburn, has added Australia's top honor to her accolades. Professor Blackburn has become a Companion in the Order of Australia. Meanwhile Australian of the Year Professor Patrick McGorry is calling for a radical overhaul on immigration and mental health systems. The family of missing Melbourne millionaire Herman Rockefeller is praying for his safe return after his car was found dumped near Ballarat yesterday. He was lost since five days ago after returning from a business trip, leaving the Melbourne airport car park. His car is now being tested for DNA. A series of bomb attacks in Bagdad have killed at least 36 people and injured more than 70. Hotels in the central of the city that are popular with westerners were targeted. At least two of the explosions were caused by suicide bombers in cars. And an international conference focusing on the long-term rebuilding task in Haiti is taking place in the Canadian city of Montreal. Ministers and delegates from 20 countries as well as the United Nations and the World Bank are taking part in the discussions. That's the news for now. I will be back with more updates throughout the day. |
