There’ve been chaotic scenes outside a Port-au-Prince court where 10 Americans have been charged with child abduction. The five men and five women were arrested nearly a week ago, after trying to take a busload of Haitian children out of the country. The missionaries say they were trying to help children abandoned or orphaned after the earthquake. It turned out many of the children still had relatives who’d survived the disaster. It isn’t clear yet if their trial will take place in Haiti.

 

The Federal Opposition says the government should release modelling which shows how much electricity prices will rise under its proposed emissions trading scheme. In parliament this week, it was revealed prices will rise by 19% in the first two years of the scheme. The government says low-income households will be compensated for any price rises.

 

And growing fears over the state of European budgets have sent global share markets sliding. All the major European markets fell. London’s FTSE lost more than 2%, Germany’s DAX lost 2.5%. The weak sentiment also spread to Wall Street where the Dow slipped 2.5%. The S&P 500 and the NASDAQ lost nearly 3%.
