Former Soviet states including Russia say they will help stop ethnic violence in Kyrgyzstan which has left more than 100 dead. The Collective Security Treaty Organization met for emergency talks in Moscow, but it's not released details on whether military action will be approved. Thousands have fled as violence increases between Kyrgyz and ethnic Uzbek residents.
US President Barack Obama says the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico will have the same impact on the American psyche as did the 9/11 attacks. Mr. Obama told the US website Political the disaster will shape the way Americans think about energy for years to come. The president's visiting the region affected by the spill as BP discusses whether to suspend paying dividends to shareholders.
NRL player Timana Tahu has spoken for the first time since he pulled out of the New South Wales’ State of Origin side. The winger walked out of the Blues training camp after assistant coach Andrew Johns apparently made a racist remark about Queensland’s Greg Inglis. Tahu says it was not just one comment that offended him. He says remarks were directed at various races and the situation was unacceptable.
Australian scientists are developing a new skin technology that could improve treatment for burns victims. The synthetic skin grows up to 1.5 centimetres thick compared to current skin grafts which only have a one millimetre surface. It's hoped that the new skin will breathe and stretch better than grafted skin. |
