The Greens are officially taking over the balance of power in the Senate today. The Governor-General Quentin Bryce has been swearing in the new Senators in Canberra this morning. The new parliamentarians include four Greens and the Democratic Labor Party Senator from Victoria John Madigan, who will become the first DLP Senator in more than 30 years. A 14-year-old boy has been charged with manslaughter over the stabbing death of a woman in Melbourne’s north last night. Police say the woman was attacked when she confronted a group of youths for hurling eggs at her house in Lalor. Officers earlier arrested four other females, but they’ve since been released without charge.
Thailand’s Red Shirt-backed opposition has won a landmark election a year after mass anti-government protests. The main opposition, Pheu Thai Party, won a clear majority of parliament’s 500 seats. Yingluck Shinawatra will become the country’s first female prime minister. She’s the sister of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra who was ousted in a military coup five years ago.
And Novak Djokovic is now the sports number one ranked player in tennis after claiming his first Wimbledon title. The Serb beat defending champ Rafael Nadal 6:4, 6:1, 1:6, 6:3 in just less than two and a half hours, though he did lose one set. It’s Djokovic’s second major win this year. He’s now played 49 singles matches this year for just one defeat. |
