UNIT TWELVE Part One
Warm Up
Dialogue 1 A第一次滑雪,B充当教练,然而B也只滑过一次雪…
A: I know I’m going to ⑴bite the dust going down this hill. I almost got killed on the chair lift! This is going to be so ⑵embarrassing. B: ⑶Don’t worry. Everyone knows ⑷you’re getting your feet wet. I’ll show you how. I bet you’ll be proficient at this in five minutes. A: This is only your second time skiing. ⑸This is definitely a case of the blind leading the blind. B: Relax. *I can hold my own. Now, point your skis toward the bottom of the hill. ⑹Easy does it! A: I don’t think ⑺I can get up enough nerve to do this. B: Here. I’ll just give you a little push… A: ⑻No!!!!!! (Later at the bottom of the hill…) B: There. *Now, wasn’t that fun? As soon as you get a second burst of energy, we’ll try it again. A: ⑼Don’t hold your breath! Dialogue 2 B是学习法律的学生。A与房东就房租的问题发生磨擦,A请B帮忙解决。
A: Sorry to bother you. But I’m having a small problem I thought you might be able to help me with. B: Sure Paula, ⑴shoot! A: Well, it is about Ms. Connors, ⑵the landlord of our rented house. B: Yeah, What happened? A: The dishwasher ⑶broke down. I had the repair done and deducted the cost from the rent check. B: And ⑷so… A: She is threatening to evict us for not paying the full rent. B: ⑸Hold on, Paula. It does sound pretty serious. But I’m sure you can work this out. A: Well, you are over at the law school. So ⑹I wondered if you would mind coming with me when we talk to Ms. Connors. We’re supposed to meet with her tomorrow night at eight. B: Sure, I’d be glad to help you straighten things out. Why don’t I stop by at about 7:30? A: *Thanks a million, you are a lifesaver.
Dialogue 3 Kevin在与Joe说话时,Joe显得心不在焉,因为Joe有心事——与Patricia订婚了。
Kevin: And we got a 50 thousand dollar ticket for construction workers⑴peeing off the roof. Joe: Great, that’s great. Is the electrician here today? Kevin: See, I just told you he⑵hit a deer. Man, I knew you weren’t listening to me. Joe: You’re right. I wasn’t. I hear nothing. Kevin: ⑶Nothing? Joe: Not a sound on the city streets, just ⑷the beat of my own heart, I think ⑸that’s how it goes, something like that. Kevin: ⑹You and Patricia got engaged, didn’t you? You can tell me. Joe: Engaged? Kevin: Come on. Joe: *Are you crazy? Kevin: What? I thought you liked Patricia.
Part Two
Everyday Expression
美国人重视一个人的真才实学。如果你的确才华横溢,他们会真心的赞美你。这是人际交流的重要一环——学会恰如其分的赞美别人。如果可以让别人的生活变得快乐,你也会很快乐,这就是“快乐法则”。
Small Talk 1: Mel: Hey, that’s a very nice hairdo you’re wearing! Janet: Oh you’re exaggerating. I’m never really good at making hairdo. Mel: You did it yourself? Wow, you are good! Janet: Thanks for saying so, but my husband thinks otherwise. Mel: He’s just got no idea of how good you are.
Small Talk 2: A: Many congratulations on your winning the game. B: That’s very kind of you, but it’s nothing special. A: You were doing great out there! B: Well, actually it’s just about luck.
Small Talk 3: A: What a nice photo you’ve taken! B: I’m flattered, but really anyone else could do it. A: You have a real talent, Ellen! B: I’m thinking of making an album, you know.
Small Talk 4: A: How smart of you to book the tickets before hand! B: Oh, do you really think so? A: Of course, otherwise you’ll just have to wait for hours. B: But I just got a call from my sister and I have to cancel the movie tonight.
Small Talk 5: A: I’ve gotta hand it to you: you really did a good job! B: So glad that you think so! A: I think you deserve a promotion. B: Oh, really? Thanks a lot…well, I still have a lot to learn, I guess.
